Most of us have had a bad experience with medicine: side effects, copays we can't afford, a drug that stopped working while we kept getting sick. Dr. Kathy Campbell has been a pharmacist in one Oklahoma community for 35 years and has served five generations of patients, and somewhere along the way she saw that the medications only worked when food and movement came with them. Her book and TEDx talk, Obesity: The Modern Famine, make a case that surprised me. Obesity isn't the problem. It's a symptom of a body that is starving for what it needs. We talk about why dieting keeps failing, why she says movement instead of exercise, the foundations of health (nutrition, sunlight, water, oxygen, movement, love and connection), her definition of trauma as what your body had to do to survive it, why mental health is often physical health, and the research connecting metabolism and the brain. Kathy is also building a network of wellness pharmacists so the pharmacist can help you before you are sick, not only after.
