In this episode
In this conversation I sit down with Dr. Matt Griswold — a chiropractor and functional health practitioner, and one of my closest friends — to talk about a simple but far-reaching principle he keeps returning to: create the right conditions and environment, and the body will do what it was made to do. It's the same idea as giving a plant water and sunlight. Matt came to this work through his own family's story — watching his mother go through repeated back surgeries, and later losing his father suddenly to a rare cancer — and those experiences shaped a lifelong question about function, prevention, and stewardship.
We get into the specifics of how he practices: measuring before adjusting, using x-rays to correlate spinal segments with symptoms rather than guessing, and then extending that same assessment mindset into supplementation, neurotransmitter testing, red light, grounding, and oxygen. But what struck me most was the human side — how he prepares his hands and his heart each morning with prayer and gratitude, and how he "washes off" the day before he walks back into his home as a father.
Underneath the health talk is a conversation about how people actually change. Matt and I have worked together for years, and we found that the physical and the emotional are two wings of the same bird. You can optimize the machine, but if the mental and emotional narratives are quietly sabotaging you, you're still flying in circles. This one is really about stewardship — of the body, and of the life you've been given to live.
Key takeaways
- The core principle: you can't force healing — you can only create the right conditions and environment, and let the body do what it was designed to do.
- To see is to know; everything else is to guess. Measuring before acting (rather than 'pop and pray') turns care into something strategic aimed at a real end goal.
- Health has become the new performance arena. Whatever you do, you're in a performance job — and the body is the vehicle that either supports or undermines the life you want.
- Assessment beats assumption: testing what your specific body actually needs is wiser than blindly stacking supplements and devices.
- Emotional and spiritual work is the 'next level unlock.' Optimizing the physical while ignoring the inner narratives leaves you running in circles.
- Rituals of preparation and release matter — starting the day in gratitude and prayer, and intentionally 'washing off' the day before showing up for family.
- Your health is a resource you've been given to steward. Staying well in today's culture takes intention, not accident.
